981,069. Welding by pressure. INSTITUT ELECTROSVARKY E.O. PATON. Jan. 4, 1962, No. 351/62. Heading B3R. A flash-butt welding device for welding pipes while supported on the pipe ends comprises a pair of annular clamps for gripping the ends of the pipes, means for moving the clamps together and a transformer for supplying the welding current. Two split clamps 1, 2, Fig. 2, each comprise clamping shoes 8 movable radially by cam surfaces 10 on arcuate members 11 movable by an hydraulic jack through links 15. With the pipe ends clamped the welding transformer is switched in and the clamps are pulled together by a motor 18 acting through pinions 17 and nuts 16 on screwed rods 3. When the ends have become sufficiently heated, hydraulic jacks 4 acting on the ends of the rod 3 are actuated. In a modification two rigid pivoted half-clamps 19, 20, Fig. 3, are urged by jacks to clamp each pipe end and the assembly is mounted on rollers 26 for movement along the pipes. In a further modification annular clamps carry shoes movable radially by annular hydraulic jacks, the left-hand clamp is movable towards the right-hand clamp by an annular hydraulic jack and wheels are provided for moving the device along the pipes.
