[Also in Division G1] A measuring device, wherein the position of a feeler 10 is indicated by fringes produced by passing light through two gratings 9, 21, one fixed and the other movable with the feeler, has gratings ruled so that the resulting fringes comprise light bands of width, at least at one point, different from the width at the same point, of the adjacent dark band. The lines on the grating may be wedge shaped (Fig. 5) or be parallel but of different width from the intervening spaces. The fringes so produced, Figs. 2 and 4, are read against a scale. The gratings may be crossed or, if of different pitch, uncrossed or alternatively reflecting gratings can be used
