Abstract

968,963. Crimped yarns. TOYO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA, and E. KAWARABAYASHI. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 28, 1961], No. 48007/62. Heading B5B. An intermittently crimped continuous filament yarn of thermoplastic artificial fibre characterized by having a crimped part and a crimp-released part in alternation in its longitudinal direction (Fig. 1) is made by continuously running a crimped continuous filament yarn of thermoplastic artificial fibre under tension, intermittently applying to said yarn along the longitudinal direction thereof a treatment liquor containing a compound capable of manifesting at least a swelling action to said thermoplastic artificial fibre, passing the thus treat yarn under tension through a heating zone, and thereby releasing the crimp of the treated part of the yarn. A suitable treatment liquor may be made by dissolving the thermoplastic material of which the fibre is made in a solvent in a proportion of up to 5% by weight of the solution. The treatment liquor may also contain a dye for the yarn. Specified materials include polyamides, e.g. polycaproamide and polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyesters e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyolefines e.g. polyethylene and polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile and its copolymers, and cellulose acetate. Crimping is effected in known manner. Specified treating agents are as follows: (i) for polyamides: formic acid, phenols, e.g. phenol, xylenols, cresols, chloro-phenol, saturated solutions of calcium chloride, stannous chloride or zinc chloride in methanol, benzyl alcohol, glacial acetic acid, ethylene chlorohydrin, dichloroethane, ethylene-glycol, cyclopropanol, cyclopentanone, cyclohexane, acetone, a 2% by weight solution of hydrogen chloride in methanol, saturated aqueous solutions of benzoic acid, and aqueous solutions of phenols. (ii) For polyesters: monochlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, methylnaphthalene, benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, salicyclic acid, phenylphenol, methyl benzoate, methyl salicylate, tetralin, phenol, metacresol, tetrahydronaphthalene, tetrachloroethane, chloroform, nitrobenzene, dimethylformamide, ethylene chloride, formic acid, benzyl acetate, acetone, dichlorobenzene, esters of acetic acid, acetaldehyde, chlorophenol, tetrachloroethane with phenol, and trichlorophenol with tetrachlorophenol. (iii) For polyolefins: carbon tetrachloride, benzene, gasoline, toluene, diethyl ether, dioxane. (iv) For polyacrylonitrile: sodium thiocyanate, potassium iodide, potassium bromide, zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, barium chloride, ethylene carbonate or dimethyl sulfone dissolved in water, optionally with polyethylene glycol, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, or benzene. (v) For cellulose acetate: acetone or amyl acetate, and amyl acetate with octyl phthalate. As indicated above, solutions of the fibre forming material in the solvents specified are preferred to the pure solvents. Specified heating zone temperatures are as follows: (i) For polyamides: 120-190‹ C., (ii) for polyesters: 120-240‹ C., (iii) for polyacrylonitrile 110- 155‹ C., (iv) for cellulose acetate 120-250‹ C. The yarn to which the treating agent has been applied may be simply kept under tension while passing through the heating zone, or may be drawn during its passage therethrough or immediately afterwards. In Fig. 2, the yarn to be treated is continuously run under tension from 21 to 25 and treating agent is supplied to the yarn intermittently from tank 23 via engraved roller 22. On passing through the heating zone 24, the crimp of the treated part of the yarn is released. In Fig. 3, the yarn to be treated is continuously run under tension from 32 to 37, 33 being a tension device, and is vibrated by a triangular pillar cam 34. The top end of a treating agent feed nozzle 35 is situated within the amplitude of the vibrating yarn and comes into intermittent contact therewith. The treated yarn is then heat-dried on wheelheater 36 and wound up via a guide roller 37.
