Abstract

547,887. Artificial silk etc.; treating textiles with liquids &c. BELL, A. S., and ANGUS, W. C. March 13, 1941, No. 3415. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Fabrics of full or voluminous character are obtained by spinning together into a yarn two varieties of staple fibre, one of which is made from filaments of highly polymeric esters or ethers and the other from cellulose filaments, forming the yarns into a fabric, and treating the fabric with an organic shrinking agent for the first variety of staple fibre. The other variety remains substantially unaffected and is thus forced to the surface of the fabric. The first variety of staple fibre may be of cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate, or of ethyl, methyl, or benzyl cellulose, or of a polyvinyl compound such as a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. The other variety of staple fibre may be of regenerated cellulose from viscose or cuprammonium cellulose solution, or of saponified cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester. The fabric may be woven with both warp and weft of yarn spun from a mixture of cellulose acetate and viscose staple fibres. The fabric may be immersed in an aqueous solution of acetic acid or ammonium thiocyanate of such strength that only the cellulose acetate fibres are shrunk. Other shrinking media which may be used are methyl propionate and propylene chloride ; mixtures of methylene or ethylene chloride or a lower alkyl formate with kerosene, benzene, toluene, or carbon tetrachloride ; mixtures of methyl acetate. or trichlorethylene with methyl or ethyl alcohol; aqueous acetone. After the shrinking treatment, the fabric may be given a slight saponification treatment. The fabric may be dyed differentially or in solid colours. In an example, a yarn spun from cellulose acetate and viscose fibres is woven into a fabric. The fabric is scoured with hot soap solution, washed, and dried. It is then immersed in acetic acid solution, washed, and dried.
