Abstract

A process for polymerizing ethylene comprises continuously passing ethylene into a first reaction zone at 130 DEG to 190 DEG C. and a pressure of at least 500 atmospheres and partially polymerizing in the presence of caprylyl peroxide as catalyst, passing the resulting mixture into a second reaction zone at 190 DEG to 270 DEG C. and a pressure of at least 500 atmospheres and polymerizing residual ethylene, optionally in the presence of an organic peroxide other than caprylyl peroxide (in particular di-t-butyl peroxide). The polymerization may be in the presence of a chain transfer agent, many of which are specified. The polyethylene obtained may be drawn into film of high transparency.
