Abstract
968,510. Anemometers. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. May 7, 1962 [May 5, 1961], No. 16452/61. Headings G1N and G1R. An anemometer has a member 1 carried by one end of an elongated support 2 which is carried at its other end on a mounting 3 which can turn on an axis or an axes transverse to and offset from the centreline of the support 2 so that on deflection of the member by the wind the support 2 and mounting 3 turn on the said axis to move a beam member 7 by an amount dependent on wind strength. The member 1 is a perforated ball and the support 2 is tubular. The turning axis comprises a knife edge, which may be around the edge of a disc 4 as in Fig. 1 for tilting in any direction. Alternatively the support 22 may be an elongated bar 23 transverse of the support (seen in crosssection in Fig. 6) which pivots about one or other of a pair of elongated knife-edges 25 and only tilts in one component direction of the wind and its opposite. The tilting movement is conveyed by a tube 6 to a flat steel beam 7, which is set transversly in the frame 8 of the apparatus, causing it to deflect. An aluminium damper 14 immersed in fluid 13 is adjustably secured by a rod 15 to the beam 7. Deflection of the beam is recorded electrically by strain gauges 12 set at its ends or by inductive elements (not shown) attached below a moving part of the beam.
