In a process of vertical gas shielded arc welding in which the melt is retained by pads moved up the seam, two horizontal streams of shielding gas issue at an angle to each other from a pair of apertures in each pad. Each pad e has a pair of lands g engaging the plates a being welded and a pair of gas passages i communicating with jets p from which gas is blown on to the outer edges of the lands g. Gas supply pipes l are connected to the lower ends of the passages i. The upper ends of the passages i open into a pair of horizontal apertures inclined towards each other and separated by a wedge-shaped portion o. The pads are cut-away above the apertures so that two spreading jets of shielding gas issue from each pad above the weld pool.
