Abstract

968,228. Automatic control systems. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Dec. 28, 1961 [Dec. 30, 1960], No. 46420/61. Headings G3R and G3X. Electricity generating plant comprising a generator driven by a prime mover the speed of which is subject to variation due to fluctuation in the energy supplied thereto is provided with means to control the excitation # of the generator in accordance with the speed of rotation n of the prime mover such that approximately # = #n. Thus the effects of transient variations -in generated power are compensated for. Fig. 1 shows a variable resistor 3b in series with the field winding 2b of a D.C. generator 2, the movable arm of the variable resistor 3b being controlled from the driving shaft of a turbine 1 by way of a Ferraris disc 3a. In figure 2 there is shown an alternator having a permanent magnetic field 20b and a capacitor 7 connected across the stator winding 20a, the capacitor current being effective to vary the resultant excitation of the alternator. The embodiment shown in Fig. 3 is similar to that of Fig. 2 but is further provided with a servo mechanism 16 operating upon a tapped transformer 25 to maintain a constant voltage across a main load 41, the transient generated power being absorbed by an auxiliary load 40. In other embodiments the generator or alternator outputs may be connected to motor-generator sets connected into a supply grid, either with a number of generators or alternators connected to operate in parallel into one motor-alternator set or with each generator or alternator operating individual motors all driving a single generator connected to a supply grid.
