Abstract

738,710. Automatic power control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 12, 1953 [Aug. 16, 1952], No. 22197/53. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] The power outputs of two or more alternators, driven by the engines of an aircraft, and connected in parallel, are individually measured to produce proportional D.C. voltages which are opposed in a closed circuit. Any unbalance thus causes a circulating current which adjusts the alternator speed regulators and on serious unbalance energizes polarized relays to trip out the machine which is not carrying load. Each generator 35 has a power measuring network, Fig. 1 (not shown) 45 in which the output of a current transformer is added to the output of a potential transformer, the resultant voltage being proportional to power. These voltages are opposed in a loop circuit which includes coils 46 on the variable ratio gear drives 37 interposed between the alternators and the prime movers driving the alternators, in addition to polarized relays 48 for tripping either one of the circuit breakers 42 on serious unbalance. A second coil 39 on each gear drive is energized from a tachometer generator 40.
