Abstract

967,987. Road traffic signals on vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Nov. 7, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1961; Dec. 26, 1961], No. 42049/62. Heading G4Q. In a vehicle turn signalling mechanism, means are provided for sensing small movements of the steering member about the zero position, and for returning the turn signalling switch to its inoperative position when a number of such movements have been sensed. In a first embodiment, Fig. 3, an automatic reset mechanism comprising pins 13 and pawls 14 is provided to automatically reset the turn indicator switch member 11 on straightening the steering member 12 after a turn. If after signalling, say, a left hand turn the steering member 12 is returned to its zero position without being turned sufficiently for one of the pins 13 to pass a pawl 14, the switch member 11 is not reset, and pawls 31 or 32 engage with the ratchet wheel 22. Any subsequent movements of member 12 in a clockwise direction will then cause the ratchet wheel 22 to rotate in an anti-clockwise direction, return motion of this wheel being prevented by pawl 35. As the wheel 22 is gradually rotated by small turns of the steering member in maintaining the vehicle along a desired path, cam 18 moves with it until it engages with member 4, further pressure of pawls 31 or 32 rotating ring 19 to reset the switch member11 The ratchet 22 then disengages with pawls 31, 32, 35 and returns to its initial position under the action of a spring 25. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, pawls 134 engage with ratchet 133 and the rotations of the steering member turn ratchet 133 until the end of slot 131 engages with pin 142 to rotate the switch member 107 to its inoperative position disengaging pawl 134. Ratchet 133 is then returned to its initial position under action of spring 138.
