Abstract
967, 887. Turbidometers. CALTEX CENTRALE LABORATORIA N.V. May 22, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 20356/63, Heading G1X. A liquid, such as fuel being supplied from a reservoir through a conduit 1, Fig. 1, pump 2, filter 3 and manifold 4 to aircraft fuel tanks is inspected as to its solid matter content by passing a proportional sample stream through filters 7, 8, in series and visually comparing the filters. Each filter may be a cup shaped holder in which filter paper is releasably held by a split ring and is observable through a cover glass. In a more elaborate arrangement, Fig. 3, fuel enters a block 31 through channel 45, passes to a pressure regulator (not shown) housed in a recess 35 and flows through passage 47 to a bore 41 housing a rotatable plug 43. With the plug 43 in position I, as denoted by the finger 54 of an operating knob 55, the fuel flows from passage 47 to bore 51 and thence through bores 48, 50 to passage 56 leading to a first filter chamber (not shown) screwed on the raised platform 32 and then through passage 66 to the second filter chamber (not shown) screwed on platform 33. The fuel leaves through passage 67 and outlet 40. At the same time fuel flows from bore 50 through passage 57, a throttling valve (not shown) in bore 42 and passage 57<1> to act on a piston 38 to force it,against the action of a spring (not shown) until it eventually contacts cover 39 to close outlet 40 and end the sampling. The position of piston 38 at any time may be seen by the movement of a ball 69 in a slot 68 and acted on by a piece of magnetic material carried by the piston 38. If the sampling has to be interrupted before it is complete, knob 55 is rotated to position II and all passageways terminating in bore 41 are closed. At the completion of sampling, knob 55 is rotated to position m so that passage 47 is shut off and the spaces on both sides of piston 38 are connected via passage 72,bores 52, 48, 49 and passage 71. The piston 38 then returns to the left under spring action and the filters may be replaced. Position IV is for checking. In this position, if the throttling valve in bore 42 is replaced by a pressure gauge the pressure regulator in bore 35 may be adjusted, and piston 38 rapidly moves to its cut-off position by liquid flowing through passages 45, 47, bores 51, 48, 53, and passage 72. An image of half of each filter may be projected so that both halves appear side by side by apparatus as in Fig. 5 (not shown).
