Abstract

967,841. Self-propelled missiles. W. F. DARLING. Jan. 2, 1962 [Jan. 3, 1961], No. 180/62. Heading F3A. [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] A rotor which may be used for missile propulsion comprises two or more scoops 11 each closed at one end and joined to a shaft 12. Rotation of the rotor in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, causes air which enters the openings 14 to be expelled axially under pressure at the open ends 15. Rotation in the opposite direction causes air to be drawn in axially at the open end 15, and expelled through the openings 14. Fig. 6 shows a rotating missile having rotors 24 and 25 disposed forward and aft. The rotor 24 draws in air axially and passes it out circumferentially to reduce drag. The rotor 25 draws in air circumferentially and expels it axially to provide a thrust.
