Abstract

961,285. Bearings. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. May 28, 1963 [May 29, 1962], No. 21369/63. Heading F2A. A self-pressurized fluid bearing has, pressure pockets arranged circumferentially at each end thereof, the pockets consist of short channels which are open at one end, and have such depth, spacing and inclination to the bearing axis that gas, drawn in at the open ends, is pressurized at the closed ends. In an embodiment, a rotor 1 of a gyroscope is mounted on a shaft 2 between members 3, 4 which are carried by reduced portions of the shaft. The bore of the rotor 1 and the ends of the hub thereof form fluid bearings with the shaft 2 and the members 3, 4 respectively. The shaft, has at each end thereof, sets of channels 9 and 10 which are at an angle to the bearing axis; and the members 3, 4 have sets of shallow depressions 11 therein, each of which is provided with an outlet channel 12. In use, fluid, drawn into the channels 9, 10 in the shaft 2, is compressed at the closed ends thereof; and fluid, drawn into the depressions 11 of the members 9, 10, via the channels 12, is compressed at the closed portions of the depressions. In a modification, the channels 9, 10 are formed in the bore of the rotor 1 instead of in the shaft 2.
