<PICT:0967769/C1/1> <PICT:0967769/C1/2> <PICT:0967769/C1/3> <PICT:0967769/C1/4> A method for producing a weakened area on glass ampoules to enable these ampoules to be readily broken open manually at the weakened area comprises wearing off the ampoule wall by frictionally applying thereto a material softer than the glass, for example aluminium or aluminium alloy. Ampoules 1, on the base of the neck 2 of which a weakened area in the form of a groove 16 to act as an incipient breaking line is to be produced, are mounted on supports 3 included in an ampoule making machine. A thin aluminium alloy disc 6 driven by an electric motor 12 is mounted on a sprung oscillating arm that urges the disc 6 towards the ampoule 1. The supports 3 rotate about an axis coinciding with the ampoule 1 axis and are moved in turn to the point where the disc 6 is applied to them. The abrasive power of the disc 6 is provided by minute fragments of glass that become embedded in its edge and in use it is self-regenerating. A new disc 6 has first to be prepared by applying it, while rotating at high speed, to a glass surface. The disc 6 is preferably applied to the ampoule 1 at an angle normal to the glass surface being attached, but may be applied as shown in Fig. 8. Instead of the disc 6, a wire or ribbon may be used or a disc-shaped brush with bristles of aluminium or aluminium alloy wire extending outwardly from its circumference. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the ampoules 1 while being transported by cradles 18 of a chain conveyer 17 are raised in turn, by a device comprising driven rubber rollers 24, to be applied against idling rollers 26 and presented to the action of the rotating disc 6. In this embodiment the disc 6 is mounted on an oscillating support 30 pivoted to a frame 21 and provided with an adjustable stop 36 to limit its downward movement. A testing device (Division B3) that applies a predetermined bending force to the neck of the ampoules is also described. A protective covering may be placed over the necks of the ampoules 1. The position of the groove may be indicated by, for example, marking with enamel.
