An apparatus for cutting crystals from a semi-conductor bar 32 comprises a cutting wheel 18 secured to a rotatable mount 16, a bar holder 30 adapted to move the bar into cutting position, and a retriever 20 for receiving the crystals 34 as they are cut and having a portion 24 for conveying them outside the cutting wheel. The cutting wheel, which may be of stainless steel, is in the form of an annulus having its inner edge 29 coated with an abrasive material, such as diamond or silicon carbide, and the mount 16, which may be of aluminium, is rotatably mounted in a housing vertically adjustable in a frame 12. The retriever 20 is of spoon-shape having a bowl portion 28 closely fitting within the inner diameter of the cutter and having a flange 26 extending around part of its peripheral surface. The retriver is also formed with a shoot-like portion 24 for guiding the crystals to the outside of the cutting wheel for delivery to a suitable container.
