536,718. Cutting or dividing glass. MAXWELL, R. E. May, 14, 1940, No. 8638. [Class 56] A method of removing the necks of ampoules, or of cutting glass tubes, consists in placing an ampoule in an horizontal position, supporting the rear end only while resting the neck portion on a rotating abrasive disc, and rotating the ampoule on its longitudinal axis to cause the disc to form an annular groove in the neck. A device for carrying out the method comprises a thin disc 24, of abrasive material, attached to a shaft 27 which is provided with a flywheel 28 and is rotated by a crank handle 31. A bracket 18, adjustably attached to the casing of the device, has an horizontal top section 19 along which a support 22 is adjustable. In use, an ampoule 21 is placed with its rear end on the support 22 and its neck resting on the disc 24, lateral movement of the neck being prevented by spaced walls 38. While the disc is rotating, the ampoule is pressed downwards lightly, and rotated, by the top of a fingec to form a groove around the neck of the ampoule. The neck can then be broken off by inserting it in one of a number of holes 47 in an inclined section of the bracket 18. A push-button brake 45 is provided to stop the rotation of the disc. In a modification, the disc is rotated by an electric motor.
