Abstract

Woven, non woven or knitted napped fabrics of fibres of synthetic linear polymers of acrylonitrile are treated with an aqueous solution of ethylene carbonate and a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate to prevent matting, pilling and shedding of the nap. The aqueous solution which may also contain antistatic agents, e.g. polyamine resins obtained by cross linking diethylene triamine with polyethylene glycol diiodide and epoxy resins and water repellent agents, may be applied to the napped fabrics by spraying, or padding and the fabrics then heated for 2-15 minutes in an oven at 250 DEG -350 DEG F. The fabrics treated may be made from fibres made from polyacrylonitrile, binary or ternary polymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile or blends comprising polyacrylontrile or acrylonitrile copolymers with 2-50% by weight of another polymer, the blend having an overall polymerized acrylonitrile content of at least 80% by weight. The acrylonitrile may be copolymerized with acrylic, a -chloroacrylic or methacrylic acid or esters thereof, vinyl chloride, fluoride or bromide, vinylidene chloride, 1-chloro-1-bromoethylene, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, a chloroacrylamide, methyl vinylketone, vinyl carboxylates, N-vinylimides, methylene malonic esters, itaconic acid or esters thereof, N-vinyl carbozole, vinyl furane, alkyl vinyl esters, vinyl sulphonic acid, diethylcitraconate diethylmesaconate, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl pyridine, alkyl substitued vinyl pyridines, 1-vinylimidazole or alkyl-substituted 1-vinylimidazole.
