Abstract
Matting, shedding and pilling of the nap of woven non-woven and knitted fabrics of synthetic fibres comprising at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile after subjection to normal laundering and wearing conditions is reduced by treating them with an aqueous solution of aniline or aniline acetate, hydrochloride, sulphate or hydrobromide. When aniline is used it may first be dissolved in ethanol, methanol, butanol or propanol and then dissolved in water. The aqueous solution which may also contain water repellents, e.g. "Phobotex" (Registered Trade Mark), antistatic agents, e.g. polyamine resins such as diethylene triamine cross-linked with polyethylene glycol diiodide or an epoxy resin, catalysts e.g. zinc nitrate, and colloidal silicon, may be applied to the fabric by padding or spraying and the fabric may then be dried and cured by heating to 240 DEG -300 DEG F. for 5-60 minutes. The fibres may be made from polyacrylonitrile, from copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile copolymerized with another monomer containing <FORM:0971237/D1-D2/1> linkages or from blends of polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer thereof containing 80-99% by weight of acrylonitrile and 1-20% by weight of another copolymerizable monomer with 2-50% by weight of the blend of a copolymer of 10-70% by weight of acrylonitrile and 30-90% by weight of another copolymerizable monomer, the blend having an overall polymerized acrylonitrile content of at least 80% by weight. Suitable copolymerizable monomers are: acrylic, a -chloroacrylic and methacrylic acids, methyl, ethyl, butyl, methoxymethyl and b -chloroethyl methacrylate, acrylate and a -chloroacrylate, vinylchloride, fluoride and bromide, vinylidene chloride, 1-chloro-1-bromo-ethylene, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, a -chloroacrylamide, methylvinyl ketone, vinylacetate, chloroacetate, propionate and stearate, N-vinylphthalimide, N-vinylsuccinimide, methylene maloinic esters, itaconic acid and esters thereof, N-vinyl carbazole, vinylfurane, alkyl vinyl esters, vinylsulphonic acid, ethylene-a ,b -dicarboxylic acids, diethylcitraconate and mesaconate, styrene, vinylnaphthalene, vinyl pyridines and alkyl substituted vinyl pyridines, 1-vinylimidazole and alkylsubstituted-1-vinyl imidazoles. The process is suitable for the treatment of high pile polyacrylonitrile fabrics to prevent matting, pilling and shedding.
