Abstract

966,842. Pipe couplings. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 5, 1963 [June 7, 1962], No. 22398/63. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling particularly for a marine conductor employed in underwater well drilling operations comprises a male coupling member 33 having an outer surface 35 tapering inwardly towards its end and having a plurality of radially-directed tapering bolt seats 42 extending inwardly from said tapering surface 35, a female coupling member 34 having an inner surface tapering outwardly toward its end, the male and female members being adapted to fit one with the other with the tapering surfaces in surface-to-surface engagement, and a plurality of radially directed taper-ended connector bolts 43 extending into the female member 34 from its outside and extendible into the bolt seats 42 of the male member 33 when the male and female members are in seating engagement, the tapered ends of the connector bolts being frusto-conical in shape and being adapted to fit in the bolt seats in surface to surface engagement. The female member has a shoulder to receive the end of the male member and may have a sealing ring in the shoulder. At least one sealing ring is placed in the tapered surface 35 of the male member and a gasket 45 is used to seal the outer surface of each bolt 43. An aligning device is carried by the coupling comprising a key 47 on the male member 33 and a receiving keyway 48 formed on the upper edge of the female member. The top 49 of each keyway is preferably tapered as shown.
