[Also in Division B8] A handle button is attached to a container or container blank by forming embossments on the button and/or the container or container blank, so that when positioned the button and container or container blank make contact at spaced locations through the embossments, and resistance welding the button to the container or container blank. An annular button 10, Fig. 1, having an aperture 15 for one end of a handle has a flange 12 with radial embossments 13 engaging an annular embossment 14 on the container 11. The embossments 13 may be separated on two sides from the flange 12 to form spring fingers 29a, Fig. 10A. Alternatively, the button 10 may have an annular embossment which if desired can be made more resilient by radial slots 27, Fig. 9, and be used with a container having radial embossments. In a modification a flanged channel-shaped button 36, Fig. 13A, has linear embossments 35 which contact two rows of embossments 37, Fig. 14, on the container. Welding is performed by electrodes 16, Fig. 5, and 18 engaging the button 10a and the container 11 respectively and positioned on the same or opposite sides of the assembly but not contacting the welding points. In this way an outer printed label 20 and an inner coating 19 of tin or lacquer is undamaged. Two buttons may be simultaneously welded to a container by engaging the buttons with electrodes of opposite polarity the circuit being completed through a conductor extending diametrically across the container or through the periphery of the container. Alternatively the two electrodes may be in parallel and a third electrode contacting the container completes the welding circuit. In a modification the button 10, Fig. 17A, has point embossments 43 engaging an unembossed container 11. Welding is effected by an electrode engaging the button 10 and an electrode 44 shaving cut-away portions 40 located beneath the embossments 43.
