Abstract

966,652. Converting. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Feb. 1, 1963 [Feb. 2, 1962], No. 4327/63. Heading H2F. [Also in Division H3] An electrical installation comprises first and second semi-conductor thyristor devices, connected in series, first and second striking transformers, and first and second circuits, the first circuit including the striking path of the first thyristor device, the secondary winding of the first striking transformer and the primary winding of the second striking transformer, and the second circuit including the striking path of the second thyristor device and the secondary winding of the second striking transformer. Referring to Fig. 1 a current surge is passed through the primary winding of transformer 29 when transistor 31 is temporarily switched on by the application of pulses to terminals 35, 36. The current surge results in the secondary winding of transformer 29 applying a control pulse to the thyristor 6 through the primary winding of transformer 27 so that thyristor 6 strikes. Thyristor 5 is similarly struck by way of the secondary winding of transformer 27 and thyristor 4 by transformer 25 and so on with the result that all the thyristors 1 to 6 are brought simultaneously into their " on " condition. Each thyristor is connected in parallel with an R.C. combination 7, 8 ... 17, 18 respectively forming a voltage divider and preventing overloading due to hole-storage effects. Fig. 2 shows how the invention is applied to a three-phase installation which comprises a transformer 40 having an over-voltage winding 41 and a number of secondary windings 42-46 corresponding to the number of sets of thyristors 1 to 5. In this case each thyristor is acted on only by the voltage of the primary winding associated with it. Resistors 39 control the current of the respective thyristors. The circuits may be used as D.C.-A.C. con verters in high-voltage direct current long distance transmissions.
