Abstract

Acetaldehyde is removed from a crude aldol condensation product of acetaldehyde thereby purifying the aldol by distilling the product in two distillation steps, the first of which is carried out under a gauge pressure of more than 0.5 kg./cm2 in a distilling tower, the temperature of the liquor under treatment in the still being below 113 DEG C. and the second distilling step being carried out under atmospheric or reduced pressure in the same or another distilling tower, the temperature of the liquor in the still also being below 113 DEG C. Preferably 40-80% of the recoverable acetaldehyde is removed in the first step. Preferably the temperature in both towers is in the range 100-110 DEG C.
