Abstract
966,584. Plate-type evaporator and condenser apparatus. SEPARATOR A.B. July 4, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 24093/61. Heading B1B. Evaporation of liquid and/or condensation of vapour is carried out in an apparatus comprising two or more plate-type units, a liquid/ vapour separator being clamped between each pair of units. The apparatus may be operated on the multiple-effect principle, and is suitable for the evaporation of milk or for the distillation of water. Preheated milk is introduced through pipe 16 into channel 18 whence it passes up into alternate compartments between the plates of unit 2, and is partially evaporated by heat-exchange with steam which is introduced, through pipe 23, into the other compartments of the unit. A mixture of milk and vapour flows up into channel 17 and into separator 3 ; the separated milk either being recirculated into unit 2 or being passed via a reducing valve (not shown) into unit 4 via channel 20. In unit 4 the milk undergoes further evaporation, the vapour from separator 3 being used as the heating medium in the plates of the unit. The milk undergoes further concentration in unit 6; and the concentrated milk is removed from separator 7 through outlet 21. The vapour separated in separator 5 is used to heat unit 6; and the vapour separated in separator 7 is used to preheat the milk, which passess through unit 8 before entering the first evaporation unit through inlet 16.
