Abstract

966,202. Valves. A. LINS. Jan. 29, 1962 [Feb. 1, 1961], No. 3280/62. Heading F2V. A hot and cold water mixing valve comprises a housing 1, Fig. 1, having a cold water inlet 3, a hot water inlet 4 and a mixture outlet 5. An inner sleeve 2, formed by separate parts 2a, 2b, 2c, defines with valve seats 9a, 11a and wall 25 a cold water chamber 6a, a hot water chamber 7a and a mixing chamber 8a. Flow from the chambers 9a and 11a to the mixing chamber are controlled by valve members 9d, 11d, the flow from the cold water chamber taking place past valve 11d, ports 13, an annular chamber 14 and ports 15 whereby the hot and cold water enters the mixing chamber at a point remote from a temperature response device 20 and thus the mixture flows past this device which is not effected directly by the hot or cold water. The device 20 comprises a housing 20a and a portion 10c of a support 10 which forms a closed chamber with a bellows 20c, connected to the portion 10c and a flange 20d of a rod 20e, the closed chamber being filled with volatile liquid such as that sold under the Registered Trade Name " Freon." The valve member 9d is fixed to the support 10 while the valve member 11d is urged by a spring 26b into contact with a nut 18a screwed into a rod 26 fixed to the support 10. The axial position of the nut 18a is adjustable by a rod 29 to control the total flow through the valve. The nut and hence the support and temperature responsive device is loaded by a spring 33 which is adjustable to vary the temperature of the mixture. The initial loading of the device 20 may also be set by the adjustment of rod 20e and flange 20d. The valve members 9d, 11d are provided with O-ring seals such as 9g. An alternative form of sealing is shown in Fig. 2, where the O-ring 9g is not located in a groove but between the valve water 9d and the portion 2c, these members being shaped with a taper against which the ring is urged by fluid pressure acting in the direction 47. This arrangement is found to produce less resistance to movement of the valve member.
