[Also in Group XXIX] In a thermostatic device of the type in which a diaphragm is caused to operate a valve when displaced by an expansible medium contained in a probe, the probe contains a plurality of solid bodies which are surrounded by a liquid, the solid bodies having a coefficient of expansion greater than that of the liquid. A probe 8 contains a number of solid particles 9 of polyethylene, the remaining space being filled with a liquid 12 of high viscosity e.g. glycerine. A net 11 is placed across the mouth of the probe. Upon expansion of the polyethylene particles, the increase in pressure in the probe is transmitted to a diaphragm 6 of polytetrafluoroethylene or caoutchouc which is disposed around a closed cylinder 4 containing a spring 5 which urges a dished member against the top wall of the cylinder. A spindle 3 projects through a hole in the top of the cylinder to cooperate with the said dished member and is connected at its upper end to a cylindrical valve body 1 which is disposed in a chamber having a valve seat 2. The flow of hot water to a radiator through the valve means is decreased upon upward movement of the cylinder, spindle and valve body and upon contraction of the polyethylene particles, these members are urged downwardly by a spring 13 mounted on the spindle 3. The probe 8 is connected to a housing 7 which is screwed to the valve housing to permit axial adjustment therebetween. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the probe 8 is connected to the housing 7 by means of a capillary tube.
