Abstract

The thermostatic controler probe consists of a hollow cylindrical tube filled with an oil such as toluence. An inner chamber of elastic material contains a wax filling with a different coefficient of expansion. The action of heat on the probe causes a pressure build-up in the capillary tube linking it to an actuator and forces the piston further out of the cylinder to operate a valve or other device. The capillary tube is also connected to a regulator device which has an inner piston to which is screwed an adjuster knob to alter the pressure in the system and hence the operating range of the actuator.
