Abstract

966,133. Universal joints. B. C. CARTER. Dec. 16, 1960 [Sept. 16, 1959], No. 31579/59. Heading F2U. A universal joint of the type comprising interdigitating claws 42, 43, Fig. 7, formed with flat faces 44 having grooves 45 therein inclined to each other, has a load transmitting element constituted by pairs of slippers 10, 11, Fig. 1, externally cylindrical and coacting through flat faces 12, 13 with an anti-friction washer 17, located in each pair of grooves, a cross-pin 16 holding the slippers together. The load transmitting elements can be readily inserted into or removed from the grooves by angling the connected shafts to align each two grooves in turn. In a modified form, slippers 20, 21, Fig. 4, are connected by a shorter crosspin 26 held in position by transverse screws 30, 31. Pressure oil supplied through ducts 35 facilitates positioning the cross-pins 26 during assembly of the joint. Springs may lie between the two screws 30, 31 and the ends of the cross-pin 26.
