Abstract
<PICT:0966104/C1/1> A jet 2 of liquefied vitreous mineral slag is mixed on a shoot 3 with mineral additives metered by a screw conveyer 9 and the mixture enters a rotating tube 4 the interior surface of which is formed as a helical groove. Here the mixture cools and solidifies and is discharged as balls. The amount of additive supplied to the slag is 5-10% of the mixture; the product is crystalline, porous to the extent of 40%, and suitable for making lightweight concrete.ALSO:<PICT:0966104/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0966104/C6-C7/2> An apparatus for mixing mineral additives into vitreous slag melts and cooling and solidifying the product comprises a mixing container in the form of a horizontal cylindrical tube 4 which is axially rotatable and the interior surface of which is formed as a helical groove. It is supplied through the shoot 3 with a jet of slag 2 and with mineral additives metered by a screw conveyer 9. The mixing container 4 is surrounded by a counter rotating tube 5 containing cooling water 8a; the first three turns of the helix have water scoops to intensify the cooling action and the shoot 3 is also water-jacketed at 8. The tubes 4, 5 are enclosed in an air-tight casing 6 to enable the slag to be discharged from the furnace by reduced pressure. In operation, the mixed materials separate into batches which solidify as balls and are discharged through the air-tight furnace discharge shoot 10 into a truck 11.
