966,076. Automatic brake adjusters. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1962 [Jan. 2, 1962], No. 49124/62. Heading F2E. An automatic brake adjuster for internal shoe-drum brakes comprises a control wheel 42 on a thrust link 22 interconnecting adjacent shoe ends 18, 20. A spring lever 38 has at one end a tipped portion 40 in operative engagement with the wheel 42 and the other end 49 abuts a shoe rim. A clip portion 46 of the lever fits in an opening 50 in a shoe web and engages an adjacent side of the web. Upon rearward movement and braking of the vehicle, the shoes 14, 16 will be spread apart at their upper ends by fluid motor 30 and will move in a clockwise direction until the secondary shoe 14 anchors against pin 28. Simultaneously a cable 62, which is attached at one end to the pin 28 and passes around a pulley 58 attached to the web of the shoe 16, will pivot lever 38 about its end 41 until the clip 46 engages the edge of the opening 50, at which time the lever pivots about clip 46 tensioning the portion 39. If adjustment is required, the tip 40 of the lever will engage the next tooth on the wheel 42 and upon return movement of the shoes 14, 16 the lever 38 will rotate the wheel 42 to adjust the link 22. The pulley 58 may be mounted on the shoe 14 and adjustment may be effected on forward movement of the vehicle.
