966,039. Valves; linkwork. ROTORK ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 26, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 42165/61. Headings F2K, F2Q and F2V. In a mechanism imparting a varying-torque angular movement to a shaft 22, particularly for actuating a plug or butterfly valve through 90 degrees with increased torque as the valve is closed, a block 15 is moved linearly across a casing 14 by a rotary or linearly-movable input shaft 11 and carries a pin 16 engaging an inclined or curved cam slot 31 in an arm 25 on the shaft 22. As shown the shaft 11 is axially movable (e.g. by an actuator as in Specifications 842,581 and 865,565) and directly coupled to the block 15. The shaft 22 carries a pair of aligned slotted arms 25 embracing the block 15 whose pin 16 carries a pair of rollers 17 engaging fixed guide slots 18. A screw 19 limits the axial movement of shaft 11. In a modification, the shaft 11 is rotary and has a screw-and-nut connection with the block 15. Electrical or other means (e.g. an inspection window) may be provided for indicating the position of a valve operated by the shaft 22.
