Abstract
<PICT:0965719/C4-C5/1> Acetylene and ethylene are formed by the action on a liquid hydrocarbon of an electric arc produced intermittently between two electrodes one of which is stationary and the other of which is moved in continuous longitudinal reciprocating movement into contact with and then away from the stationary electrode at a predetermined frequency having a cycle of not more than one second. The impact of the meeting electrodes keeps them clean and strikes the arc which is interrupted as they move apart. When alternating current is used the frequency of the moving electrode may be the same as the supply and synchronized so that contact of the electrodes occurs when the voltage is near zero. The electrodes may be a simple pair or as shown in Fig. 2 may comprise two fixed electrodes 11 and 12 connected to the electricity supply and a pair of connected moving electrodes 13 and 14 or (Fig. 3, not shown) may comprise six such sets of electrodes for use with a three-phase supply.
