[Also in Division H1] An arrangement for supporting and counterbalancing an X-ray tube unit comprises a telescopic tube 3-7 arranged to connect the unit (not shown) to an overhead support to permit vertical movement of the unit whilst restraining the unit against lateral displacement, and a cable drum 32 mounted on the support and arranged to carry a cable 35 for supporting the weight of the tube unit, the drum being coupled to a cam-shaft 28 bearing one or more torque equalizing cams 31 associated with a tension spring 29 arranged to apply tension to the periphery of each cam, the form of the cams is such as to maintain a substantially constant counterbalancing tension in the supporting cable as the latter is unwound from the drum, and each draw tube of the telescopic tube is supported by a cable 37, 38, 39 from a respective cable drum coupled to the cam shaft, the diameter of each drum being such as to provide the requisite range of movement for its corresponding drawtube on raising or lowering the X-ray tube unit. The cable 35 supporting the X-ray unit may be double or treble, and a double or treble start thread is formed on the cable drum. The whole arrangement runs on an overhead track, and electromagnetic brakes are provided on the trackway and the cable drum.
