Abstract

The invention comprises 4,41-bipyridylium salts of formula: <FORM:0965589/C1/1> in which R is a C1-C4 alkyl radical, R1 is an alkyl radical having 5 or more carbon atoms and X- is an anion, e.g. chloride, bromide or metho-sulphate. They may be prepared by quaternising a 1-alkyl-4-(41-pyridyl)-pyridylium mono-quaternary salt with an appropriate quaternising agent.ALSO:4,41-Bipyridylium salts of formula <FORM:0965589/A5-A6/1> in which R is a C1-C4 alkyl radical, R1 is an alkyl radical having 5 or more carbon atoms and X- is an anion, e.g. chloride, bromide or methosulphate, have herbicidal activity. They may be used in liquid compositions, in solution or dispersion in water or an organic solvent, or in the solid state with a suitable solid carrier. The compositions may contain wetting and dispersing agents, e.g. an ethylene oxide-octylphenol condensate, binders, stickers, corrosion inhibitors, stabilizing agents and colouring agents. Specified forms are powders, granules, solutions and dispersions.
