Abstract

4,41-Bipyridylium diquaternary salts (other than halides of the 1,11 - dimethyl - 4,41 - bi - pyridylium ion) are prepared by reacting a 4,41-bipyridyl or a mono-quaternary salt thereof with a quaternizing agent in the presence of a reaction medium consisting principally of water.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise a 4,4\sv-bipyridylium quaternary salt (other than a halide of the 1,1\sv-dimethyl-4-4\sv-bipyridylium ion) and water. Corrosion inhibitors and surface active agents may also be present.
