Abstract

964,999. Thermal partly magnetic switches; protective arrangements. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Sept. 29, 1961 [Sept. 30, 1960], No. 35275/61. Headings H2B and H2H. A telephone line FL is connected to earth through a thermo -magnetic relay R and a spark gap voltage arrestor FS. On overload the relay causes contact set r1 to close, short-circuiting the relay and the spark gap, and contact set r2 to close, sounding an alarm bell W. The relay comprises a permanent magnet Da which maintains a balanced armature A<SP>1</SP> in engagement with pole shoes P3, P4. These pole shoes are formed as serially connected non-inductive windings St, St<SP>1</SP> which are made of a substance whose permeability decreases with increasing temperature. On overload, current flows through the windings St, St<SP>1</SP>, causing a decrease in their permeability and allowing contact set r to close under the action of a spring. The relay is maintained in the operated position by the flux flowing through the polepieces P1, P2 and the armature. A relay having an unbalanced armature co-operating with one pole shoe which is in the form of a thermo-magnetic non-inductive winding is described, Fig. 2 (not shown).
