Abstract

An oil additive is obtained by neutralising by treatment with an alkaline earth metal compound, a mixture of petroleum sulphonic acid and/or an alkaryl sulphonic acid and an unsaturated fatty monocarboxylic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms and carbonating the product obtained. The sulphonic acids may be obtained (Procedures A and B) by chlorinating a paraffin wax having 23 carbon atoms in the molecule, then treating with benzene in the presence of aluminium chloride and finally treating with oleum and mineral oil; or (Procedure C) treating a furfural-refined Mid-Continent heavy distillate with oleum at 100-120 DEG F. The preferred alkali earth metals are calcium, barium, strontium and magnesium, and the acids may be hypogeic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, palmitolic acid and behenic acid, Carbonation is effected by blowing CO2 gas for 0.5 to 5.0 hours at atmospheric pressure at 140-170 DEG C.ALSO:Prevention of "squawk" in the lubrication of automatic transmissions is effected by adding to the lubricating oil the substance obtained by neutralizing by treatment with an alkaline earth metal compound, a mixture of a petroleum sulphonic acid and/or an alkaryl sulphonic acid and an unsaturated fatty monocarboxylic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms and then carbonating the product obtained. This substance may be obtained according to the methods described in Division C2. In Example III there is shown the effect on a conventional lubricant of a substance obtained by reacting barium hydroxide, oleic acid, sulphonic acid and a paraffinic mineral oil and blowing with CO2. Polyalkyl methacrylates, dialkyl thiophosphates, phosphorus - sulphide, -polyolefin reaction products, metal phenates, sulphurized metal phenates, metal sulphonates and phosphorus sulphide-dicyclic terpene reaction products may also be added.
