Abstract
Acrylonitrile is bulk polymerized to form rigid, solid, transparent bodies by a process wherein a mixture of powdery, flocculate or agglomerated polyacrylonitrile and monomeric acrylonitrile containing as a promoter at least one of: mercurous nitrate, mercuric nitrate, cupric nitrate, mercuric chloride, mercuric bromide, aluminium nitrate, magnesium nitrate, cadmium nitrate, ferrous perchlorate, chromic nitrate, nickelous nitrate, p-toluene-sulphinic acid by itself or in admixture with p-toluene-sulphonic acid, azobis-isobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, is left to stand at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. until the desired polyacrylonitrile has formed but is still in contact with monomeric acrylonitrile. In the preferred embodiment monomeric acrylonitrile is mixed with the promoter and the initially formed non-rigid polymer is left in the mixture. A small quantity of an oxidising agent such as hydrogen peroxide may be added. Other substances such as wetting agents hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride or plasticizers such as diethylphthalate may be present in the reaction medium.
