Abstract
964,044. Ballast removing apparatus. MANNlX CO. Ltd. Feb. 9, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 5051/62. Heading E1G. Apparatus for removing ballast from beneath a rail track has a propulsion means 14a adjustably connected to a main frame plate 10 which carries a conveyer 11 to support the track 13, and a ballast removing unit comprising a transverse blade 26 which deflects material loosened by a digger unit 27 on to a transversely moving conveyer 24. The main frame 10 extends forward in a pair of nose beams 34a supporting the ends of the conveyer 11, a plurality of free running rollers 36 capable of vertical adjustment relative to other parts of the apparatus, and a preliminary levelling blade 42 having limited pivotal movement. The digger comprises an hydraulically driven roller 28 having a number of radially projecting tines 31 to penetrate and loosen the ballast before being ploughed by the sloping blade 26 to the conveyer 24 which deposits the ballast at the track side. Combinations of one or two digger units with one or two propulsion units all separately adjustable for height and tilt may be used, the apparatus being controlled and powered from a unit 46 travelling on the track.
