In railway track working apparatus two devices for working under the sleepers are pivotable about longitudinal axes on either side of a rail vehicle from positions clear of the track to positions below the track. A vehicle 20 movable on the track 23 comprises a rigid beam 21 supported adjustably on bogies 24, 25, the front bogie 24 having a yoke 26 secured to a conventional ballast plough as described in Specification 793,759. An aligning device 30 is attached to the beam as are four lifting jacks 31a, 31b, 33 and rail engaging dogs 32a, 32b, 34, as described in U.S.A. Specification 3,054,359. Outwardly projecting structures 36b support shafts 37b about which pivot rectangular tubes 40 in which slide tubes 44 rigid with tubes 45 supporting sleeper propelling rollers 46a, 46b driven by motors 47; the rollers being thus pivotable from positions clear of the track to positions under the sleepers by jacks 42. In removing sleepers, the ballast plough is towed by cables 36 and through the yoke 26 tows the beam 21. The propelling rollers 46a, 46b are lowered beneath the track and hammers 56b force the sleepers off the track and onto the toothed rollers 46a, 46b, which eject the sleeper outside the track. In another embodiment the sleeper remaining device is replaced with and undercutter or self-propelled plough, such as described in Specification 964,044, in the parts pivotable to a position under the track.
