Abstract
963,990. Speed-responsive switches. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 20, 1960 [Sept. 25. 1959], No. 32347/60. Heading H2B. A switch responsive to mechanical overload and suitable for use with a thermooopying machine such as that described in Specification 829,002, comprises a drum 10 mounted on a shaft 11 and engaging a friction-drive disc 13 fastened by rivets 26 to a first deflection plate 14, members 13, 14 having openings 22 which receive bolts 16 rotationally securing a second deflection plate 15 to the drum 10 and which allow limited relative rotational movement between members 10, 13. Springs 21 force tabs 24 on the plate 15 to engage tabs 23 on the plate 14, the tabs 23 forming an obtuse angle with the direction of rotation. A cover 17 is secured to a pest 18 on the plate 15 by a screw 19 whose head forms an operating member for a microswitch 20 and, if desired, a mechanical linkage. Normally the shaft 11, which may drive the belt of the thermocopying machine, is rotated by a drive cone 25 primarily through the engagement of tabs 23, 24, the friction between the members 10, 13 providing an additional driving torque. Should the load on the shaft 11 increase unduly, rotational movement between the members 10, 13 occurs which causes the tabs 23 to slide against tabs 24 and force the plate 15 away from the plate 14 to actuate the switch 20, which may open to extinguish the lamp supplying the copying radiation. The drive cone 25 may be replaced by a belt or multiplegear drive.
