883,018. Inertia switches. CITROEN S.A. ANDRE. April 15, 1959 [April 17, 1958], No. 12861/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXIV] A switch actuated to disable brake applying means in response to a predetermined rate of deceleration of a vehicle wheel comprises a base-plate 20 and cover 21 bolted to the fixed part 27 of a bearing for axle 2 which carries the vehicle wheel on its other end. A shaft 1 is coupled to axle 2 by a slot 4 and pin 3, and a member 8 held in frictional engagement with disc 7 by a spring washer 9 is driven thereby. A screw 17 on a flywheel 5 is held by a spring 18 in engagement with a projection 8a on member 8. The flywheel 5 is otherwise freely rotatable on shaft 1 and carries an insulated contact 12 for engagement with a contact 11 on member 8. Rotation of shaft 2 counterclockwise (Fig. 3) thus drives member 8 and flywheel 5, electrical connection to contact 12 being maintained by means of a blade 16 engaging a stud 22 wired to terminal 23 in cover 21. If the drive decelerates above the predetermined rate the inertia of flywheel 5 causes it to move relative to member 8, stressing spring 18 and closing contacts 11, 12, since the friction between member 8 and disc 7 is greater than the torque due to spring 18. The impact of contact 12 on contact 11 is, however, reduced by frictional slip and rebound off the contacts is prevented. Specification 883,019 is referred to.
