Polymethacrylic esters; polystyrene and poly carbonates are coloured by applying thereto in bulk 1 amino- 2- aldehydoanthraquinoneanil, 4 - (p-toluidino) - N - methyl - 1,9 - anthrapyridone, 4-(phenyl)-amino-N-methyl-1,9-anthrapyridone, and the following substituted anthraquinones: 1-phenylamino-, 1, 8-di-phenylamino-, 1, 4-di-pmethylphenylamino-, 1, 4-di-p-methoxy-phenylamino-, 1-amino-, 1-methylamino-, 1 -amino-4- phenylamino-, 1, 4-diamino-2, 3-dichloro-, I-pmethylphenylamino-4-hydroxy-, and 1-amino-2- phenoxy-4-hydroxy-anthraquinones, and di-, tri- and tetra-hydroxy anthraquinones containing at least two alpha-positioned hydroxy groups, but excluding the use oft, 4-di-(p-methylphenylamino) anthraquinone for the colouring of polycarbonates. The dyestuff may be applied to granular or molten polymer and the mixture homogenized, or it may be added to monomeric methacrylate, styrene or to the starting materials for the production of polycarbonates, followed by polymerization to polymethacrylate, polystyrene or a polycarbonate. The examples describe the colouring of polycarbonates obtained by reacting 2, 2-(4, 4 1-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane with phosgene or diphenyl carbonate, and 1, 1-(4,41- dihydroxydiphenyl) cyclohexane with diphenyl carbonate. Also described is the colouring of solid polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene, and the addition of dyestuff to methyl methacrylate monomer, which is then bulk polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
