Abstract

1,245,852. Grafted polycarbonates. FABBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 15 Aug., 1969 [30 Aug., 1968], No. 40858/69. Heading C3G. A vinyl or vinylidene monomer is polymerized in the presence of a solution of a thermoplastic polycarbonate derived from a dihydroxydiaryl compound and having no unsaturated polymerizable groups. Specified monomers are alkenyl aromatic monomers and mixtures thereof with acrylonitrile or a substituted acrylonitrile. The polymerization may be carried out in a solution obtained during preparation of the polycarbonate. In examples, (a) styrene and acrylonitrile are grafted on to a polycarbonate derived from bisphenol A, or bisphenol A and 1,1 - (4,4<SP>1 </SP>- dihydroxydiphenyl)cyclohexane, in solution in chlorobenzene using azodiisobutyronitrile as catalyst and (b) styrene is grafted on to bisphenol A polycarbonate in solution in chlorobenzene using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst.
