Abstract

Polymer-in-monomer syrups in which at least 50% by weight of free and combined monomer is methyl methacrylate comprise at least 10% by weight of a polymer of methyl methacrylate or copolymer of methyl methacrylate with one or more organic compounds containing monovinyl unsaturation, dissolved in methyl methacrylate in amount such that the syrup has a bulk viscosity at 25 DEG C. in the range of 0,5 to 50 poises, together with 0,01 to 1,0 mole per cent of a chain transfer agent having the formula <FORM:0896905/IV (a)/1> where R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, carboxymethyl or carboalkoxy methyl; R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkyl or alkoxy alkoxyalkyl; and R3 is an alkylene or polyalkylene radical or chain of alkylene radicals joined through ether linkages. The syrups may be prepared by partially polymerizing methyl methacrylate in the presence of the chain transfer agent to the desired viscosity and quenching by adding cold methyl methacrylate containing an inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, catechols and pyrocatechols. Specified chain transfer agents are mercaptoacetic acid, isooctyl mercaptoacetate and glycol dimercaptoacetate. Optional comonomers include cross-linking agents, e.g. ethylene dimethacrylate, propylene dimethacrylate, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinyl benzene, triallyl cyanurate and diallyl phthalate, which may be added after quenching, or in small amounts before quenching. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of initiators, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, diethyl peroxide, diisobutyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile. The syrups may be mixed with initiators and optionally inert additives, e.g. glass fibres, powdered metals, pigments, natural and synthetic fibres, and polymerized to form shaped articles, e.g. sheets, or used in laminating wood and plastics.
