Abstract

963,723. Heel-seat lasting machines. CAMPEX RESEARCH & TRADING CORPORATION. April 18, 1962 [May 2, 1961], No. 15139/62. Heading A3B. A heel seat lasting machine comprises wipers, a hold-down located forwardly of the wipers, a support located below the hold-down, for supporting a last with a shoe upper and an insole positioned thereon, pincers mounted on the last support for gripping the margin of the upper near the toe end, means for closing the pincers on to the lasting margin and then moving them away from the support to stretch the upper about the heel of the last, means for thereafter raising the support to clamp the last between the support and hold-down, means for thereafter raising the pincers to stretch the upper tightly on the last, and means for thereafter advancing the wipers to wipe the margin of the upper down upon the heel portion of the insole. This machine may be used to shape the upper, counter stiffener and lining construction of Specification 963,721. Last support and upper tensioning unit. A post 20, Fig. 1, is pivotly mounted at 22 on a piston rod 16 which moves vertically in a cylinder 14. At the top of a last pin holder 44 mounted on the top of the post 20, is a last supporting plate 54 (Fig. 9) with a convex lower surface corresponding to that of the concave groove 52 in which it rests. The width of the plate 54 is less than that of the groove 52 while the diameter of the hole 58 is larger than the diameter of the last pin. A swivel block 40 (Fig. 4) rests on a collar 26 which by means of a shaft 28, pinion 30, gears 32, and a chain 36 and wheel 38 (Fig. 1) can move up and down the post 20. The upper tensioning unit 68 is mounted on bars 62 and connected to piston rods 66 each of which moves approximately horizontally in cylinders 64 pivoted to bars 62 rigidly mounted one on each side of the swivel block 40. The unit has a toe rest roller and a T-bar 88 (Fig. 13) both of which can be raised and lowered, the former by a wheel 82 (Fig. 1) and the latter by a piston in a cylinder. On brackets 120 which are slidably mounted on the prone legs 122 of the T-bar, side pincers 124, which are closed by piston rods 132 in cylinders 134, are mounted. So that the position of the side pincers may be adjusted a shaft 114, which is screwed to bosses 118 secured to brackets 120, has right and left hand threads at opposite ends, and collars 116 pinned to it on either side of a rib 110 of a bracket 92. This bracket is adjustably mounted to the top of the T-bar and has a toe pincer (Fig. 14, not shown), similar to the side pincers, mounted on it. For different size shoes the position of the unit 68 along the bars 62 can be adjusted (Figs. 15 and 34, both not shown). The post 20 can be moved towards the heel seat lasting unit 176 (Fig. 1) by a rack 160 moving downwards and turning a shaft 156 and a crank on which a pitman 152 is eccentrically mounted. Heel seat lasting unit 176 and hold-down unit 294. The unit 176 is mounted on a main slide plate 178 (Fig. 25) which is slidably mounted for movement to and from the last. A guage 330 (Fig. 3, not shown) is provided for setting the position of the plate for different sizes of shoes. When the piston rods 214 (Fig. 25) of the cylinders 212 move forward they cause first a U-shaped heel clamping pad 238, of for example flexible material, to move forward till the centre of the pad engages the heel and then the ends of the pad to move inwards as the levers 216, which connect the rods 214 and the pad, pivot about studs 224. Presser members 252 are then caused to engage the lower portion of the outside of the pad at the narrower portion (Fig. 40, not shown) of the last. Chains 240 are wrapped around the outer periphery of the pad 238. The contour of the pad may be adjusted by rotating the knobs 334 on the studs 236 which link the pad and levers 216. Beneath a bridge 254, which is secured to the plate 178, a gear 264 (Fig. 28) is rotably mounted. This gear meshes with a rack 262 mounted on a piston rod 260. A wiper supporting plate 268 has a slot 272 extending transverse to the rack and which receives an eccentrically mounted crank pin 274 depending from the gear 264. The plate also has rollers 288 extending upwards into the cam slots 284 in the wipers 282. Hence when the piston rod 260 moves the wipers forwards the plate 268 first moves forwards at the same speed as the rod but gradually slows down as the left hand position of the slot 272 in Fig. 28 is reached, thus causing the wipers to pivot inwardly about a point 286. The hold-down bar 304 (Fig. 29) which is supported by a pivot 300 is normally in the lowered position due to a high portion of a cam 320 (Fig 23, not shown) being between the rollers 308 and 310 but it is raised away from the last, when the wipers start to move inwardly, by a lug 289 (Fig. 25) on the piston rod 260 actuating a valve 292 which causes a low portion of the cam 320 to move between the rollers. The heightwise position of the bar 304 can be adjusted by a screw 314. Control system. The machine is automatically operated by a pneumatic system (Fig. 36, not shown) linking the various cylinders and has a pedal lever 368 (Fig. 1) which can set a control valve 378 in three positions one of which is a neutral position in which the machine is stopped for any manual adjustment necessary. The system includes various sequence valves (Fig. 33, not shown) which have a strong resistance to air flowing in one direction so that the air will take a path of less resistance, if possible, before passing through the valve but the resistance to air flowing in the other direction is small. Specifications 963,728, 963,729, 963,730 and 963,731 are referred to.
