UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED SVVALLOIV AND HENRY YUST, OF SENECA, MISSOURI; SAID SWALLOWV ASSIGNOR TO SAID YUST.
FLOUR-SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,493, dated September 29, 1891.
Application filed April 18, 1891.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED SWALLOW and HENRY YUST, citizens of the United States, residing at Seneca, in the county of Newton and Stateof Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flour-Sifters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention consists in new and useful improvements in flour-sitters, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our new and improved flour-sitter. Fig. 2isa vertical sectional view taken through the sitter. Fig. 3 illustrates in detail the operating gearing and connections.
The same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the several parts by their designating-numerals, 1 indicates the cylindrical body of our new and improved sifter, near the lower end of which is secured on its inner side the slightly-inclined flange 2. Just below the flange 2 an annulargroove 3 is pressed or formed in the body 1. In the lower end of the body is mounted the reciprocating sieve, which is formed of wire-cloth, the edges of which are secured to a metal guide-rim 5, the outer edge of which fits and plays in the annular groove 3, formed in the lower end of the body 1. On the side of the cylindrical-body is secured a bearing 6, on which is pivoted the large co -wheel 7, having the small handle 7 for convenience in revolving it. On the lower part of the bearing 6 is pivoted a cog-pinion 8, which is formed with the projecting wrist-pin 8.
9 indicates a connecting rod or wire, one end of which is pivotally mounted on the wrist-pin 8 of the cog-pinion, while its other end is pivotally connected to the outer end of an arm 10, projecting out from the sieve through a slot 11 in the lower end of the body 1. It will now be seen that as the cog-wheel 7 is revolved by its handle the cog-pinion will be given a large number of revolutions for-each single revolution of the drive- Serial No 389,497. (No model.)
wheel '7, and as the pinion is thus revolved it fectively sifting the flour with a motion which closely resembles that given by hand to the ordinary flour-sitter. A series of spurs or upwardly-reaching arms 12 are erected upon the upper surface of the sieve and are adapted to move and thoroughly agitate the contents of the sifter and thus produce better results, as will be readily understood.
It will be seen that our improved floursifter dispenses with the rotating agitator commonly used, which by rubbing over the surface of wire-cloth tends to rub dirt and hard lumps of flour through the sifter and wears out the wire-cloth.
Our invention, while sitting flour very rap- 7o idly, retains all dirt and hard lumps of flour and reciprocates the sieve back and forth with great rapidity, instead of revolving an agitator over a fixed sieve-cloth, as in some of the flour-Sifters of this class.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and practical advantages of our new and improved floursifter will be readily understood without requiring further description.
