Abstract
An improvement in the process for the preparation of a 9a -halo-11b -hydroxy steroid by reaction of a hydrogen halide with the corresponding 9b ,11b -epoxy steroid, comprises treating a soluble 9b ,11b -epoxy steroid with an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride or hydrogen fluoride in respective concentrations of about 30% to about 38% and about 48% to about 79% calculated on a weight to weight basis. Preferably treatment is effected at -30 DEG C. to 35 DEG C. As soluble steroid there may be used 16a -methyl-9b ,11b -oxido-1 ,4-pregnadiene-17a , 21-diol-3,20-dione and 16a -methyl-9b , 11b -oxido-1, 4-pregnadiene-17a , 21-diol-3, 20-dione or the corresponding 16b -methyl isomers.
