Abstract

Steroidal 4-en-3-ones are prepared by treating a solution of a steroidal 4 : 6-dien-3-one in an inert solvent, with liquid ammonia, then adding an alkali metal and finally removing excess of said metal. In examples: (1) lithium metal is added to a stirred mixture of ethereal ergosta-4 : 6 : 22-trien-3-one and liquid ammonia, the excess metal destroyed with ethanol or ammonium chloride, excess ammonia evaporated and ergosta-4 : 22-dien-3-one isolated with ether and purified by chromatography on alumina. (2) As in (1) using metallic sodium. Similarly 4 : 6-cholestadien-3-one is reduced to cholest-4-en-3-one, and 6-dehydroprogesterone to progesterone. The Provisional Specification refers to the reduction of 4 : 6-dien-3-ones which possess a -C10H19 (stigmasterol) side-chain. U.S.A. Specification 2,624,748 is referred to.
