Abstract
A luminescent phosphate activated by monovalent copper and bivalent tin is represented by the formula <FORM:0963475/C4-C5/1> wherein M represents one or more of Al, Mg, Zn, Cd and B and x, y, z, p and q are subject to specified conditions. Starting materials comprising compounds of Sr, Cu and Sn and of at least one of the elements Al, Mg, Zn, Cd and B, and of P are heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, such as nitrogen or nitrogen and hydrogen, at between 1000 DEG C. and 1250 DEG C. for 1 to 2 hours. The element Sr and the phosphate group can be introduced as a mixture of strontium hydrogen phosphate and strontium carbonate in the starting materials. The Cu can be introduced as copper sulphate in the starting materials. A layer of the luminescent material can be used in combination with a mercury vapour discharge tube. Several specific examples are described and their spectral emission curves given. Specification 925,709 is referred to.
