Abstract
925,709. Luminescent materials; discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 5, 1959 [Nov. 8, 1958], No. 37567/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A source of radiation comprises the combination of a gas and/or vapour discharge tube, such as a low pressure mercury vapour discharge tube, and a luminescent layer on support means, in which the layer contains a phosphate activated with monovalent copper and, if desired, with bivalent manganese, if the composition. in which Me represents at least one of the elements Al, Mg, Zn, Cd and B, and in which x, y, z, p and q are subject to specified numerical conditions. A layer, e.g. of titanium dioxide, for reflecting light emitted by the luminescent layer can be provided on part of the tube envelope between the luminescent layer and the envelope. The luminescent material can be prepared by mixing specified compounds of the desired elements and heating for 1 to 2 hours in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, for example a reducing atmosphere of nitrogen or a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogens, at a temperature between 1000‹ and 1250‹ C. A mixture of strontium hydrogen phosphate or de-ammonium hydrogen phosphate and strontium carbonate can be used for the introduction of strontium and of the phosphate group. Copper sulphate in cupric form can be used for the introduction of copper, and the heating is carried out in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. Manganese, if used, can be introduced as MnNH 4 F 3 or other specified compounds. Several specific examples are described.
